Dribbling and 1v1 — Football Drill

1 vs 1, Dribbling, Defending

A 1v1 drill where you first dribble through and then play a traditional challenge to two small goals. The defender may start moving once the attacker has reached the point of the first turn. After winning the ball, the defender can score by dribbling over the end line that lies between the cones. Switch sides and roles after each repetition.

Dribbling and 1v1 - football drill

In the dribbling phase, use short touches with the instep or outside of the foot, and keep your eyes on the defender at the end of the slalom. In the duel, stay low; make the beating touch only once the defender is off-balance, then immediately follow with a change of rhythm and acceleration. The defender slows down before the attacker, stays in a side-on stance on the forefoot, and keeps their eyes on the ball—don’t go to tackle until the moment to win possession is right. After winning the ball, the first touch should be directed toward the gap between the cones.

How do you recognize that the defender is off-balance and that it’s the right moment to beat them? As the defender: how do you know when the right time to win the ball is?
