Running Duel and Interception — Football Drill

1v1, defending, dribbling

Practicing the gradual approach to contact and stealing the ball from a back press. In phase 1, players start moving from the coach's mark and aim to reach the ball first. Contact is made at the start; it's important to use hands and take control of the running line. In phase 2, practicing ball stealing in a somewhat similar situation where another player has the ball. The attacking player can attempt to score if they can advance close enough.

Running Duel and Interception - football drill

Starting acceleration from the toes, the first steps are short and quick. The running line should be between the attacker and the goal, not directly behind. Contact should be shoulder to shoulder. The arm can be placed in front of the opponent to take control of the running line if the touch is long.

From what angle do you approach the attacker, and why not directly from behind? How do you recognize that the touch has gone far enough for a steal? What do your hands do during contact, and where is the line for a foul?
