Three sessions built around passing

Three sessions for U10-U12: a warm-up, two drills and a game in each. Scan the QR code pitchside and the drill starts moving on your phone.

What's inside

  • A pitch diagram, description and key questions for every drill
  • Nine animated drills, plus three small-sided games to finish
  • A4 format, print it and take it with you

Pass and move

The first session starts with three-player warm-up passing: the middle player moves towards the ball and plays it straight back. In Passing for an overlap, the passer runs round behind the receiver, who dribbles towards the cones and plays the ball into the overlap. In Finishing from a cut-back, a player goes round a cone by the end line and pulls the ball back for a shot. The session ends with a 3v3 line game, where a team scores by stopping the ball behind the opponents' end line, so players attack and defend in depth.

First touch

In the second warm-up the middle player's first touch already sends the ball towards the other side. The passing diamond asks for a one-two and then a long pass with the first touch, and players always rotate in the direction of the pass. In the Barcelona shooting drill, two one-twos set up a first-time shot. The closing possession game keeps the ball in a limited area. As variations, some players stay outside the area or a joker always plays with the team on the ball.

The vertical pass

The third warm-up adds a long pass: a short pass in, the return, then a long pass to the far end while the middle player gets out of the passing lane. Passing, dribbling and shot from a through pass uses the cones as the last line of defenders: the runner times the run to stay onside and finishes first time. Finishing from three positions ends with a cross from the end line that two players attack. The end zone game is 3v3 with two jokers in the end zones, and a goal counts when a player receives a pass in the end zone.

The library has more passing drills, and the blog has 5 passing drills for youth teams - by age group.
