Who’s afraid of the defender? Dribbling game from island to island

Dribbling, 1 vs 1

Description

Mark out an area of approximately 16 x 20 metres. At each end, create an island about three metres deep, and divide the sea between them into two halves with a halfway line. There are three defenders in the sea: two in one half and one in the other. The defenders stay in their own half. Everyone else has their own ball and starts on the same island. The attackers dribble the ball from one island to the other, and each successful crossing is a point. Set off straight back from the island. If a defender wins the ball, the attacker and defender swap roles. Change the defenders every couple of minutes. Make it harder by adding defenders or removing the halfway line, allowing the defenders to move across the whole sea. For a large group, set up several areas.

Quality Factors

Head up already on the island and throughout the whole dribble: eyes searching for a free gap between the defenders. Longer touches and speed in open space, short touches and the ball close to the foot near a defender. In the feint, a clear shift of body weight in front of the defender, then a sharp change of direction and acceleration to beat an opponent. After going past, get your body between the ball and the defender. Defender side-on on the balls of the feet, win the ball only when the touch gets away.

Key Questions

  • How do you see which gap is the best one to go through?
  • When do you leave the island, and why at that moment?
  • How does your touch change when a defender comes close?
  • Defender: how do you recognise the moment when you can win the ball?
