Possession, Attacking, Small-Sided Games
Four attackers line up wide without a fixed pivot. Each attacker is marked by a defender, and there is a goalkeeper in goal. A pass is played from the middle to the flank, and the passer immediately cuts diagonally toward the goal. The marker runs after, and a gap is left in the center. The other central player and the right winger both shift to the left side of that position, so the ball carrier has a safe passing option close by. The winger passes the ball back into the filled position; the ball then continues to the right, and the cutting player becomes the new right winger. Everyone has shifted one position. The same pattern repeats in the other direction when the right central player passes to the right flank and cuts. The others then shift to the right side of their positions. If the marker stays in place, the cutter receives the ball directly and shoots. Play to one goal as a real game. When the defenders win the ball, they try to carry it over the halfway line. Make the game harder with a bib. The attacker in the bib is not allowed to receive the ball; their task is to find space for the others. The bib switches players every few minutes.
The passer starts cutting at the same moment the ball is played to the flank. The empty space is filled immediately: the ball carrier always has one passing option a few meters away. The ball carrier stands in an open stance so they can see all three teammates. The ball moves with one or two touches. The cut and the filling of the position are done at the same time, so one movement distracts while the other creates space.
Why should the passer start cutting immediately after the pass? Which position do you fill when the player next to you starts running?
