Attacking, Finishing, Passing
Three blue attackers: the base player, the pivot, and the winger. They face two defenders and a goalkeeper. The pivot plays close to goal with their back to goal, with a defender on their back. The base player passes to the pivot and then runs onto the pass. The pivot lays the ball off with one touch to the arriving base player. At the same time, the winger on the opposite side runs to the far post. The other defender has to choose whether to press the ball carrier or follow the runner. If they stay with the runner, the base player shoots. If they come to press, the base player passes a low ball across the goal to the far post, and the winger finishes. Start the defenders at half intensity. After a turnover, the reds attack to the halfway line, and a dribble over the line counts as a point. Switch roles and sides every few repetitions.
The pivot receives the pass in a side-on position, with their body between the defender and the ball. The base player starts moving immediately after the pass and arrives next to the pivot at layoff distance. The pivot lays the ball off with one touch, rolling it along the ground to the arriving player. The winger starts the far-post run as soon as the base player passes to the pivot, and arrives at the post at the same time as the ball. Before the layoff, the base player looks at the other defender and chooses whether to shoot or pass to the far post accordingly.
How do you see that you can pass to the pivot? When do you start your far-post run, and what happens if you start too early?
