4v2 rondo — Football Drill

transitions, possession · U10+

Mark a square-shaped area and create three pairs of two players. Two pairs are positioned on the outside along the edges, so there are four passers (one on each side). One pair is inside the area, trying to win the ball. The outside pairs keep possession by passing from side to side. The defenders split the work: one pressures the ball carrier, the other closes off the next passing lane. When the steal is successful, the pairs swap positions and play continues immediately without a new restart. Adjust the size of the square to the level of the group. A smaller square shortens the passing distances and forces quicker touches.

The passer opens the angle before the ball arrives so the next pass can be played without an extra touch. The first touch is directed toward the side the pass is going to. Pass the ball with enough pace that the defender doesn’t get in, but the receiver still takes possession. The defending pair doesn’t move as one unit: the pressure player goes to the ball, while the other stays on the passing lane.

What do you look at before the ball comes to you? Which passing lane is open and which is closed? As a defender: which of you pressures the ball and which closes the lane? What do you do in the first second after winning the ball?
