Set Pieces, Passing, Possession, Goalkeeper · U9+
Practice a goal kick in an 8v8 game to restart play with short passes. The goalkeeper and two center-backs play against two pressers. The center-backs spread out to the wide areas near the corners of the penalty area, and the goalkeeper kicks the ball from the ground to the player who is free. The blue team scores a point when it passes or carries the ball through the side gate about 24 meters from the goal line. The red team tries to win the ball back and score. When a presser closes down a center-back, the center-back returns the ball to the goalkeeper, and the goalkeeper switches play to the other side. Start without pressers, then add one, and finally two. In an 8v8 game for 10–11-year-olds, the goal kick can be taken from anywhere inside the penalty area, and the opponent does not need to retreat: it is enough that they are 5.5 meters from the ball. The pressers can therefore stand in the exercise as close as they would in the match.
The center-backs spread wide and stand in side-on positions so they can see both the goalkeeper and the field. Before the kick, the goalkeeper checks which center-back is free and where the presser is coming from. Take the goal kick with the inside of the foot, rolling the ball along the ground to the foot that is farther from the presser. The center-back guides the first touch forward into the free space. If the presser is already close, return the ball to the goalkeeper with one touch.
Which center-back do you see is free? Which foot do you pass with and why? When do you carry the ball forward yourself, and when do you return it to the goalkeeper? What happens on the other side when both pressers come to the same side?
