Gate passing game: move away from the ball - soccer drill

Translated from Finnish ·

Small-Sided Games, Passing, Possession

Description

When teammates come next to the player on the ball, one defender can cover two of them. In this game, you only score from a pass through a gate to a teammate, so someone has to move away from the ball to the other side of the gate. The animation first shows the usual mistake and then the correct way. Area about 22 × 28 m. Spread five two-metre gates around the area. 4v4 with no goals. A point is scored when the ball is passed through any gate to a teammate who controls it on the other side of the gate. You cannot score two consecutive points through the same gate. Defenders can defend everywhere, and the team that loses possession defends immediately.

Quality Factors

Players off the ball move away from beside the player on the ball to get behind a free gate. Behind the gate, find a position where there is a free passing lane through the gate for the passer. Before the pass, the passer scans to see who is free behind the gate. First touch behind the gate to keep play moving, with eyes already on the next free gate.

Key Questions

  • Where do you move when your teammate receives the ball? Why is it not worth standing next to the player on the ball? How do you know who you can pass through the gate to? Which gate is free when you receive the ball?
