Dribbling

Description

Set up a square circuit of approximately 20 × 20 metres and mark the corners with cones. On the top side, place four slalom poles at 2.5-metre intervals, and on the bottom side, place two cones about five metres apart. The right and left sides remain straight. Each player has their own ball, and the players start at different points on the circuit so that nobody is queuing. Everyone moves in the same direction. In the slalom, use dribbling with short touches and move through at speed. The cones on the bottom side act as defenders: dribble straight at them, use a feint, and beat an opponent by going past on the opposite side. Anyone who catches up can go around the outside. One circuit suits 6–8 players, so for a large group set up more than one circuit. Change direction every few laps, or have the players dribble with only the right foot or only the left foot. If there are no poles, the slalom can be done with cones.

Quality Factors

In the slalom, short and frequent touches with the inside of the foot and outside of the foot, keeping the ball close to the foot. On the straight, a longer touch with the instep and a longer stride, slowing down before the slalom and the cones. In the feint, a clear shift of body weight in front of the cone, then a sharp change-of-direction step to go past on the other side. In changes of direction, stay balanced on the balls of the feet with the knees slightly bent. Keep your head up and use your peripheral vision on the ball so that you see the player ahead in time.

Key Questions

  • How do your touches change when you come out of the slalom onto the straight?
  • At what point do you slow down before the cone, and why exactly there?
  • When is the right moment to beat an opponent after the feint?
  • Where do you look when there is another dribbler in front of you?
