Description

Four blue players attack: a fixo, two wide players and a pivot in front of the goal. The red players defend in a 1-2-1 diamond in front of the goalkeeper. The fixo passes wide, and the whole diamond shifts to the ball side during the pass. The nearest defender presses the receiver immediately, the top player moves inside to the ball side, the opposite wide defender moves more centrally and the deepest defender stays in front of the pivot. When the wide player dribbles along the touchline, the pressing defender tracks sideways and does not drop back towards the goal. The pivot checks towards the ball, but the deepest defender reads the pass and intercepts it in front of the pivot. After winning the ball, the red players attack the halfway line, and dribbling the ball over the line scores a point. The blue players score a point with a goal. Change roles every few repetitions.

Quality Factors

The whole diamond moves to the ball side as the ball travels wide. The nearest defender presses the receiver immediately on the first touch. When the wide player dribbles, the pressing defender tracks sideways on the balls of the feet and does not drop back towards the goal. The deepest defender stays in front of the pivot on the ball side and watches both the ball and the pivot at the same time. Intercept the pass in front of the pivot as soon as it is played.

Key Questions

  • Why does the whole diamond shift even though only one player is pressing the player on the ball?
  • Why must the pressing defender not drop back towards the goal when the wide player dribbles?
  • What tells the deepest defender that the pass into the pivot is about to be played?
  • What happens if the deepest defender stays behind the pivot?
