Passing, First touch, Possession, Football & soccer rondo drills

Description

Mark out a square of approximately 10 x 10 metres. Four players are on the sides of the square, one on each side, with a defender in the middle. The players on the outside keep possession of the ball. They may move along their own side, but must not go inside the square. The defender tries to intercept the pass. When the defender wins the ball or the ball goes out of the square, the defender swaps places with the player who lost possession. Play restarts immediately. Ten consecutive passes equals one point. Make it easier with a bigger square or unlimited touches, and harder with a smaller square or a two-touch limit.

Quality Factors

Movement along your own side before the pass so that the defender is not between the player on the ball and your position. Scanning before receiving the ball: where the defender is and which passing lane is open. First touch away from the defender in the direction of the next pass, or a one-touch pass when the lane is already open. Pass with the inside of the foot beyond the defender, with the right weight so that the receiver can control the ball. The defender approaches the player on the ball quickly and uses body shape to close one passing lane.

Key Questions

  • Where do you move on your side when your teammate receives the ball, and why?
  • How do you recognise that a pass through the middle will not get past the defender?
  • When do you play one-touch, and when do you take a control first?
  • As a defender: which passing lane do you close when you approach the player on the ball?
