Football coaching tools compared

There are more digital tools for planning football sessions than you might expect. Some focus on drawing diagrams, others on season planning, others on managing an entire club. This comparison looks at nine options and where each one fits.

The tools

We picked tools a football coach is most likely to find when searching for session planning software. We left out pure team management apps (like TeamSnap or Heja) because they don't offer visual session design.

Sport Session Planner

Sport Session Planner is a UK-based platform built around 3D visualisation. You can build sessions in a three-dimensional stadium view and rotate the camera freely. The platform has a large library of thousands of pre-built sessions. Sessions can be saved as PDF, and club members can share them as a link via WhatsApp, email, or SMS. The interface is available in English and Spanish.

The 3D view is impressive but comes with a steeper learning curve. Drawing a simple drill takes longer than in a 2D tool. The individual membership costs €75/year. There's no monthly plan and no free trial, but you get your money back if you cancel within seven days. Club pricing is on request only.

SoccerDrive

SoccerDrive is a US-based platform combining a drill drawing tool with a large content library. The basic drawing tool is free, and a membership ($9/month, cheaper on an annual plan) adds saved drawings and practice plans. The site has plenty of ready-made drills and age-specific practice plans (U6–U16).

The drawing tool works but feels dated. The platform targets recreational youth coaching in the US, so the content leans toward grassroots level. Coaches outside North America may find the terminology and focus less relevant.

• Best for: beginner coaches looking for ready-made session ideas

Football Planner

Football Planner is different from the rest: it's first and foremost a season planning tool. You build weekly micro-cycles that combine field sessions, training load, and recovery into periodisation plans. Drawing is minimal: a free calculator lets you mark out a playing area and place players.

The Starter plan costs €9.99/month or €99.99/year (plus VAT), with a 7-day free trial. Pricier Professional and Club tiers are still to come. One testimonial on the site comes from a performance coach who has worked at Ajax, Leverkusen, and Crystal Palace. According to the maker, it works on phones and tablets as well as desktop.

• Strength: periodisation and season planning at professional level
• Weakness: little session drawing
• Best for: professional or semi-professional coaches who need structured season plans

CoachTools

CoachTools is a Finnish platform covering team management, communication, video analysis, and load monitoring. It's closer to a full club management system than a standalone planning tool. It covers more than 50 sports, including football, futsal, floorball, ice hockey, and tennis. It runs on iOS, Android, and the web, in four languages: Finnish, English, Swedish, and German.

Pricing is per team: Coach €75, Core €150 and Performance €300 a year, excluding VAT. Every team needs its own licence, and the club admin tools switch on once at least one team has Performance. Clubs get a shared drill library, but visual drill drawing isn't CoachTools' core feature.

The Tactics App

The Tactics App is a UK-made desktop app for building animated tactics and drills. Animation is the main event: you draw and animate drills and match situations, then export them as 4K video. Squad management and per-player notes are built in, which tells you about the intended audience: analysts and scouts as much as coaches.

It runs on Windows and macOS; iPad and iPhone support is promised for the first update. There's no free tier: Basic costs £8.99/month (or £79.99/year) for one device, Pro £13.99/month (£119.99/year) for three synced devices, both with a 7-day trial. A Club plan has custom pricing.

• Best for: analysts and coaches who present tactics as video

RenderFoot

RenderFoot is a free drill planner, one of 16 free football tools on the same site. You build a session from drills, set a target duration, add coaching notes and print it with an equipment list. There are 16 ready-made drill templates to start from: rondos, shooting, passing and pressing.

It's completely free and you don't need an account. The catch is where your work lives: the session is saved in your browser's local storage, so it's still there next time but doesn't sync to another device. There's no paid tier. The planner comes in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Arabic.

• Strength: free with no account, quick to print
• Weakness: work stays in one browser, a small set of templates
• Best for: a coach who wants a printed session today without signing up

CoachTruly

CoachTruly is a browser-based drill editor and session planner from the Finnish company Wingmen Oy, which also makes Nettikoutsi. It covers football, futsal, floorball and ice hockey. Drills animate step by step on a timeline, and the public football library has more than 200 drills.

A free account can create, save and share unlimited drills and sessions, but it shows ads and the library images carry a watermark. The site also says your content may be used in CoachTruly's public libraries. Pro costs €69.95/year for one coach and removes the ads and watermarks. The Club plan is €395/year (excluding VAT) from five teams, with unlimited coaches. Team calendar features are in early access. The interface comes in English, German, Spanish, French and Swedish.

• Best for: coaches who want unlimited free drawing and don't mind ads

Clubroom.io

Clubroom.io is a Danish coaching platform for football clubs, built for single coaches and whole coaching staffs. You draw on a full pitch, number your movement arrows and press Play to animate them, then save the pitch as an image or print it.

The free plan stops at three drills. Pro ($39/year or $5/month) adds unlimited drills, the session planner, public sharing, print-ready plans and AI generation. A Club plan adds a shared library and roles, but its price differs between the site's own pages: $99/year on the home page, $159/year on the pricing page. Data is stored on servers in the EU. The interface is in English only.

• Strength: cheap Pro plan, data stored in the EU, works on phone and tablet
• Weakness: three drills on the free plan, sessions need Pro, English only
• Best for: coaches happy to pay a small yearly fee for unlimited drills

TacticsBoard

TacticsBoard is a browser-based online football tactics board where coaches draw session diagrams and build training events from them. Players, balls, cones, lines, and zones go onto pitch templates (full pitch, half pitch, third, or blank). Drills can include animations.

The drill library has more than 120 drills, each one in all six languages. We made most of them ourselves, the rest come from users, and 52 are animated. You can browse it without an account and copy any drill as a starting point.

Individual drills are assembled into training sessions that are shared via link with other coaches. Clubs get their own features. Coaches work from the club's shared drill bank, and a team's sessions and matches show up for all its coaches. The admin sees the whole club's week on one page, and a team with nothing scheduled for the next two weeks is flagged.

A free club covers three teams, with as many coaches as you like. On a paid club plan (from €149/year) every coach in the club gets Premium, and the club logo goes on PDF printouts.

AI shows up in two places. Jürgen, the AI assistant coach, answers coaching questions, helps with the app and suggests drills from the library, in the coach's own language. For now it's on desktop browsers only. You can also build a session with AI: give it a topic, player count, age group and length, and it picks matching drills from the library with a duration for each. It doesn't draw new drills. Both need you to sign in, but a free account is enough.

A team calendar holds sessions and matches, but there's no real season planning.

Works on phone and desktop. It can be installed to the home screen as a PWA, so it works like a native app without an app store. The interface comes in six languages: Finnish, English, Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese. The basic version is free, Premium costs €4.99/month, and club plans start at €14.99/month. No sign-up required to start drawing.

• Best for: coaches who want to draw their own sessions and share them with the coaching team

The right tool depends on what problem you're solving:

• Want to draw sessions fast: TacticsBoard or SoccerDrive. Both have free basic versions.
• Want to plan for free without an account: RenderFoot saves the session in your browser and prints it.
• Want unlimited free drills and don't mind ads: CoachTruly.
• Want polished 3D diagrams: Sport Session Planner is the only option.
• Need season planning: Football Planner is built for exactly this.
• Want to turn tactics into video: The Tactics App exports animations as 4K video.
• Want a shared club drill bank for free: TacticsBoard's free club covers three teams.
• Looking for a club-wide system: CoachTools covers team management, communication, and tracking.
• Want a ready-made session library: Sport Session Planner and SoccerDrive offer the most pre-built content.

Most of these tools complement each other. Football Planner's season planning and TacticsBoard's session diagrams, for example, solve different problems.

We make TacticsBoard, so here's plainly who it's built for: youth and grassroots coaches and their clubs. In the session planner you can build a session on your phone on the bus and open it at the side of the pitch. There are 120+ ready-made drills to start from, which you can edit and animate, or you can let the AI build a session from library drills.

For a club, the big difference is price. We didn't find a free club tier on the other tools' sites. On TacticsBoard, three teams get a shared drill bank and team calendars (five events per team) for free, with no card, and you can invite as many coaches as you like.
